From sadness to joy -

The announcement that the Ursuline Sisters would retire from our community, and would leave the Diocese of Laredo where their education ministry has been so fruitful, was received with great sadness. Bishop James A. Tamayo has been working and praying that more women religious would bring their ministry to the diocese and help our community to meet social, educational and pastoral needs. The loss of the Ursuline Sisters was a discouraging setback, and a reduction in the number of "workers in the vineyard of the Lord" to help bring more people to know and love Christ.

But the Lord turned sadness into joy. The Diocese of Laredo was given the opportunity to acquire the former Ursuline Convent and maintain its purpose as a home dedicated to serve religious vocations. The property, located at the corner of Jarvis and Corpus Christi Street in Laredo, was transformed into a House of Discernment for Priestly Vocations and was dedicated Casa Guadalupe, both to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe, mother of the Redeemer, and to acknowledge the service and generosity of the late Mr. Guadalupe Martinez and his wife Lilia, whose foundation made the purchase of this property a reality for Bishop Tamayo.
